“I need real food,” he chuckled, answering the second question first and opening the menu with one hand, although he already had a pretty good idea of what he wanted. “Yeah, I think a list would be good. But I’ll defer to you a lot, cause I’ve been to Europe before. Just never, you know, with anyone extra special.” He peered at her over the top of the menu and rubbed his thumb along the side of her hand.

She lowered her gaze, but grinned, turning a little pink around the edges. “‘Extra special’ is nice. I like that.” She glanced at his upside-down menu, not really needing to look - they’d been here enough that she practically had the thing memorized. “And you can help guide me then, tell me which things are really worth it, and what you think I’ll enjoy most. You know I like it that you have more experience than I do…” Her grin widened at her own naughty little joke, even though she ducked her head a bit more and turned a slightly deeper shade of pink.

“Someday, I won’t anymore,” he chuckled ruefully. “Someday, you’ll be all caught up to me, and I’ll have nothing left to teach you, except what endless devotion feels like.”

Corny! I call corny!

“We land in Paris on the 16th,” he smiled, setting his hand comfortably over hers. He wondered if he’d ever get used to how he dwarfed her in every single physical aspect. “But I didn’t want to make solid tour plans without your input.”

She wiggled her thumb around so it could rub along the edge of his, but rested her chin in her other hand. “Paris…oh…” She sighed happily. “Should we make a list of the things we’re most interested in seeing? Then we can narrow it down from there…” She grinned as the waitress approached. “Are we eating real food, or just a snack?”

He laughed and, just as expected, held the door high over her head so she’d have room to walk past. “Yep!” he said. “I wanted to be sure they’d be alright with my stealing you for several weeks, and Dave promised to take care of as much stuff as he could on their end.” He followed her in and, since the diner was relatively empty, they simply walked to their favorite booth, greeting the server as they did. It was good to be a regular.

She slid into the booth, shaking her head. “I can’t believe they kept it a secret! They’re usually not good at that.” As usual, Snow leaned forward on the table so she could curl her legs underneath her on the seat. “Where do we start? How far have you gotten in the planning?”

Finally extracting himself from the car, he was quick to take her hand as they walked towards the diner. “The plane leaves on June 14th, that’s a Friday,” he told her. “And it’s going to be a really long flight. We have a layover in New York while we get on a plane that can take us across the Atlantic.”

“As long as we sit together, I don’t care how long it is. And you can use some of my extra leg room ‘cause I don’t need that much,” she joked, twinkling up at him. “Is this why Dave asked about my passport a couple weeks ago?” She pulled open the diner door, knowing that Sam would hold it above her head so she could enter under his arm.

Sam laughed and tried and failed to kiss her back, so that he was essentially making awkward air kisses every time her lips touched his face “So then you don’t want me to shred the tickets,” he asked as a statement.

She pulled back to look him squarely in the eye. “No.” Had she ever said said that word with such finality? Probably not. She laughed and crawled off him, back to her own seat. “Let’s go eat, and you can tell me all about it.”

“Well, we’ve got three weeks!” he smiled. “We can definitely add Austria to the list of countries.” He pulled into the parking lot of the little diner they’d made a habit of visiting. “I’ve got the departure date two weeks after finals, so you have some time to decompress before you need to start packing.”

She waited until he’d shut off the engine before throwing herself at him; admittedly, it was a bit awkward over the stick shift and between him and the steering wheel, but her enthusiasm couldn’t wait. “You think of everything,” she gushed, kissing him on all the parts of his face that she could reach. “Thank you!! Three weeks—I can’t believe it.” A few moments more of excited kisses followed.

“I wanted to spend a few weeks doing a tour. It’s funny how you can go to Europe and visit the other countries on a day trip. France, Spain, Italy, Germany… Anywhere you’re interested in going? We can fit it in, I’m sure.”

She bit her lip; he hadn’t mentioned it, but… “Umm, maybe Austria? I’d like to see where Mozart was born, in Salzburg. But anything, really - Paris, or the Riviera, or Florence, or Venice, or Provence, or Bavaria….”

“Yes,” he grinned. “Europe. I mean, if you don’t want to go, I could always shred the tickets…”

She grabbed his arm, knowing that he wouldn’t really, but too caught up in the moment not to. “NO!!” Snow struggled to keep her voice at a reasonable pitch. “You already have tickets? Where will we go?”

He laughed at her adorable enthusiasm and let himself be dragged. Once they were securely in the car, engine humming and music turned down so they could hear each other over it, he said. “So… I’m going to Europe. And I want you to come with me.”

Her eyes went very round. They had talked briefly at Christmastime about Hawaii, but… “Europe?! Me? With you? Us?” She was stunned into silence, afraid to believe it.

“Yes,” he grinned. “Europe. I mean, if you don’t want to go, I could always shred the tickets…”
